2012 brings many exciting
challenges and opportunities to Sustainable Alamance. Our major objectives for the coming year
include:
Establishment of a Family
and Community Economic Sustainability Center - the FaCES Center. The center will serve as a central presence
to serve those in need in the community.
This facility will provide easy access for those seeking assistance as
well as those that have a desire to help but needed an access point into the
world of poverty and community development.
The FaCES Center will be a
location for intake, teaching and training, entrepreneurial development, and perhaps
a location for healthy living advice, medical assistance...... all within an
environment that is non-threatening and non-judgmental.... leading to more and
better access and use.
Establishment of an Urban
Farm. We have been given access to 4
acres of underutilized land within the city limits, and plan an urban farm top
raise fresh produce. This urban farm
business will provide a way to create
jobs, build relationships with individuals and within the community, and help
provide locally produced, healthy food that can be provided for the parts of the
community that hive the highest rates of diet related illnesses.
Imagine men that have been
selling drugs now selling healthy food into the same neighborhoods they used to
victimize! Imagine neighborhood picnics
in areas that families would not dare to engage neighborhoods. We not only restore lives but families and
neighborhoods using healthy food.
We are also planning a study on God's heart for the community and the marginalized in January of 2012, starting on January 3. Space is somewhat limited, so p;lease let us know if you are interested.
